Bastyr University Library

The Bastyr University Library offers the most complete collection of materials on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the Pacific Northwest. The library has two branches: the campus library and the Center library, located at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health. The campus library features a spacious main room, a computer lab, a quiet mezzanine study area and a copy center. The Center library offers a core clinical collection and focused resource collections in satellite areas. The responsive, friendly library staff is committed to individualized service; they provide reference and research assistance, conduct library orientations, and offer ongoing MEDLINE and Internet search classes.

Resources: The library contains extensive resource materials, including  books, journals, Chinese herbal references, video and audio tapes, interactive resources, language collections, as well as a listing of Internet sites relative to the study of Chinese medicine.

Books: The library owns over 19,000 volumes in subject areas such as acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, biomedicine, Chinese herbal medicine, Qi, medicinal plants, moxa, etc..

The library’s journal collection and database subscriptions provide students and faculty an unprecedented number of full text articles at their fingertips.

Databases: The library provides access to a wide range of electronic databases, such as MEDLINE (PubMed), AMED, AltHealth Watch, Proquest, and various botanical and dietary supplements databases.

Journals: The journal collection emphasizes titles in the fields of complementary and alternative medicine and the core biomedical titles standard at all medical schools. The library currently has 250 U.S. and international subscriptions on topics relevant to our holistic health curriculum. The list includes 14 journals specific to the field of acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) and 38 (five of which are newsletters) relating to Western and Asian botanical medicine.

Many of the more general complementary and alternative medicine journals regularly feature research articles relating to AOM. The library has recently added several new oncology journals that emphasize integrative treatment strategies to support the clinical doctorate in acupuncture program.
